Well hello there! It’s been awhile! I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since my last post. My interests have ebbed and flowed, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to continue with my blog. It just might contain some different things versus my regular makeup and beauty features! With that thought in mind, I wanted to do a roundup of the best Canadian book subscription boxes that I’ve personally tried!
It’s really wild to think, but I think it was this time last year I was looking for Canadian book subscription boxes and I honestly couldn’t find that many. The industry and just Canadian book content in general has changed SO MUCH over the past year it’s mind boggling! I hope to share some info for those like me, just wanted a good Canadian book subscription box!!
Sweet Reads
Price for a single box: $89 CAD
Book a surprise?: Yes
Sweet Reads was the first book subscription box that I tried. It was really the only book subscription box that I could find that would reasonably cater to Canada. The box that I received was a ‘Limited Edition’ box where they have different themes. The one I specifically got at the time was the Book Lovers Box. I think this ended up being a bit more than a regular box, but I could see the value in it.
The good thing about Sweet Reads is definitely it’s breadth of options. Currently as I’m writing this up they have the regular monthly box, Valentine’s Day boxes, and a Thriller box. They also occasionally have discounted boxes available (at around the $80 price point).
Here is what the Sweet Reads’ team lists that will be in a box:
- A newly released novel
- Three-four items connected to your novel’s storyline/setting/characters
- A delicious drink to set the mood
- A sweet treat to enjoy while reading
I do think the value is there for Sweet Reads (this is the most expensive box on the list keep in mind) but would recommend trying it if you are looking for a subscription box.
Hushbug Book Box
Price for a single box: $84.99 CAD
Book a surprise?: Yes (unless a special edition box. Hints are provided at the book)
The next book box I tried was the Hushbug Book Box. This intrigued me a lot because there was a focus on Rom-com books which are my books of choice. I had found out about this box right during its inaugural month and promptly ordered it.
I was really pleased again with the items in it and the value seemed to be there. Similar to Sweet Reads, Hushbug does limited edition boxes with certain themes. The ones up right now are Valentines Day, Cozy Mystery and their Happy Birthday box (which is crazy that it’s been a whole year for them)!
On the Hushbug website the boxes are described as containing:
- A newly released rom com book
- A treat or snack
- 3-5 curated items
If you like Rom Coms and love a good surprise, I’d definitely recommend!
Lit Love Book Box
Price for a single box: $85
Book a surprise?: Can be if you want, otherwise you pick the book
On to Lit Love! Lit Love came on the scene I think just one month after Hushbug. They have a bit of a unique concept in where you get to choose the book (unless its a limited edition box where the book is set). The first box I got was I think was their first last February. I think the fact that you can choose the book out of 4-6 options (always including a surprise option as well) sets this box ahead of the rest in that if you buy a lot of books or subscribe to a lot of boxes, you know that you won’t get a duplicate book.
They have quite a few genres available mostly focusing on thrillers, mystery and romance.
I also did one of their special edition boxes for Wilder by Christina Lauren where you open up different gifts by page number which relate to the section you’ve been reading. It was just a super fun reading experience and I’d highly recommend! I have an instagram story highlights of everything I got in that box.
Happily Ever After Book Box
Price for single box: $70 CAD (it auto does a subscription which you can cancel after buying a single box)
Book a surprise?: No
Now for the newest book box in town! Happily Ever After Books is an indie online bookstore that features JUST romance. Crazy right? I love the idea. I think the store just came to fruition middle of last year so they haven’t been in business long.
This is the cheapest book box but it does contain slightly less items. For the inaugural box, it came with three items, stickers, book marks, and the book.
The hugely unique thing about this box is that you can do what is called a title swap. The box is not a surprise and you’ll know exactly what is in it before you get it. I was actually able to make use of this as the title, Exes and O’s by Amy Lea, I’m getting in another book box. I swapped this book in for The Dead Romantics which is featured in the image above!
Another unique thing, because it’s a book store that runs this box is that you can actually add on books for a discount of 15% along with free shipping that they combine with your subscription box. I also made use of this discount and really loved getting everything at once.
